Two New Books on Knee and Hip Replacement Recovery, Written by Our Founder

PhysioHome founder Nicolas Marchant has published two books: Total Knee Replacement and Total Hip Replacement, complete week-by-week recovery guides written for patients, not clinicians. Both are available now on Amazon.

If you're facing a joint replacement, or you're a few weeks into recovery and wondering what comes next, these books are the plan we wish every patient had before they left the hospital. This post explains what's in them, why we wrote them, and how to get a copy.

    Why We Wrote Them

Most joint replacement guides are written by surgeons. That makes sense for the surgery itself, but it leaves a gap: the surgeon hands recovery off to "your physical therapist" and the book moves on. The months that follow, learning to manage the stairs, the shower, the bad days that feel like a setback, are the part patients actually live through, and it's rarely covered in real detail.

Nicolas Marchant has spent nearly two decades in clinical practice, including several years inside the Joint Replacement Unit at Lions Gate Hospital, working with hundreds of patients through exactly this recovery. Both books are written from that experience: what actually matters, what's normal, and what's just noise.

Total Knee Replacement: A Physical Therapist's Complete Guide

Subtitle: Deciding, Preparing, and Recovering Week by Week

This book covers the full arc of a knee replacement, starting before you've even decided on surgery:

    • An honest look at what surgery can and can't fix, and what the realistic alternatives are
    • How to choose a surgeon, and the questions worth asking before you sign anything
    • Prehab: how the weeks before surgery shape the months after
    • A week-by-week recovery map, from the first two weeks through twelve weeks and beyond
    • The specific exercises that rebuild strength and movement, with sets, reps, and progressions
    • "Is this normal?" answered honestly for the pain, the swelling, and the days that feel like going backward
    • The warning signs that mean it's time to call your surgeon

Total Hip Replacement: A Physical Therapist's Recovery Guide

Subtitle: Prehab, Precautions, and Getting Strong Week by Week

The hip book follows the same week-by-week structure, with a sharper focus on the questions that are specific to hip replacement:

    • A straight answer on precautions. Anterior and posterior surgical approaches are not the same recovery, and this book does not blur them together
    • What to set up at home before surgery, and the preparation that measurably shortens recovery
    • A progressive exercise program organized by what your body is ready for next, not a rigid calendar
    • Week-by-week milestones from the first two weeks through beyond three months
    • The dislocation question, handled directly instead of with vague reassurance
    • Getting back to driving, stairs, travel, work, golf, and hiking

    Who These Books Are For

You, if you're still deciding whether it's time for surgery. You, if your date is booked and you'd rather walk in prepared than anxious. And you most of all if you're already home, a few weeks out, holding a folder of discharge instructions and wondering what you're supposed to be doing with your days.

Both books are written in plain language, with a full glossary, an FAQ section, and the research behind every claim. Neither one replaces individualized care from your own physiotherapist, and both say so directly.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy the books?

Both are available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle formats. Visit our books page for direct purchase links to each title.

Are these books specific to BC or Canada, or do they apply anywhere?

The clinical guidance applies broadly to anyone recovering from a total knee or total hip replacement. Coverage and insurance details reference the Canadian system where relevant, but the recovery timeline, exercises, and precautions are the same regardless of where you live.

Do I need to read the book if I'm already a PhysioHome client?

No. Our therapists provide individualized, hands-on guidance during every visit, which the books can't replace. Many clients find the books useful as a reference between visits, especially for understanding what's normal on the days we're not there.

Is the hip replacement book different from the knee replacement book?

Yes. They're separate books because the surgeries, precautions, and recovery timelines are different enough to deserve their own dedicated guide rather than a combined, generic one.

    Who is the author?

Nicolas Marchant, founder of PhysioHome and a registered physiotherapist with nearly two decades of clinical experience, including several years in the Joint Replacement Unit at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver.

Can I get a physical copy, or is it ebook only?

Both books are available as paperback and Kindle ebook on Amazon.

Do the books cover prehab, or just recovery after surgery?

Both. Each book includes a full prehab section covering how to prepare in the weeks before surgery, since that preparation has a real effect on how recovery goes.
